How sharing works
- Open an item and choose Share.
- Enter the other person's email. They need a PasswordPal account — a free one is fine.
- Check their key fingerprint if you want extra assurance, then choose Can view or Can edit.
- The item appears under Shared with me in their vault, and they get an email to let them know.
Encrypted for them alone
Every account has its own public/private key pair. When you share, your browser encrypts that one item's key with the recipient's public key. Only their private key — which is itself locked by their master password — can open it. We relay the encrypted key; we can't read it.
You stay in control
- View-only or edit — change permissions any time.
- Edits stay in sync — when you (or an editor) update the password, everyone sees the new one.
- Revoke instantly — stop sharing with one click. (They may already have seen the password, so consider changing it.)
- See who has access from the item's Share panel.
Sharing lots of items with the same people? A Family or Teams plan gives you shared collections that everyone can use, with Premium included for each member.
Questions
Does the other person need Premium?
No. Anyone with a free account can receive shared items. Sharing items out requires Premium (or a Family/Teams plan).
Does a shared item count towards their free limit?
No — items shared with you don't count towards your item limit.
What is a key fingerprint?
A short code that identifies someone's public key. If you read it to each other and it matches, you know the item is encrypted for the right person.
